Continuation of Softwood Lumber Check-Off
In the Feb. 23rd Federal Register, the US Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Marketing Service, published a notice that it will be conducting a referendum on the continuation of the Softwood Lumber Research, Promotion, Consumer Education and Industry Information Order, commonly referred to as the softwood lumber check-off.
The Final rule, effective August 3, 2011, notes that the check-off will be financed by an assessment on softwood lumber domestic manufacturers and importers, and will be administered by a board of industry members selected by the Secretary of Agriculture.
The purpose of the program is to strengthen the position of softwood lumber in the marketplace, maintain and expand markets for softwood lumber, and develop new uses for the softwood lumber within the United States.
The referendum will be conducted by mail from Aug. 1-25, 2016. The current Order went into effect in 2011, and must be renewed every 5 years. The notice directs that a referendum be conducted among eligible domestic manufacturers and importers of softwood lumber to determine the support for the program to continue. Softwood lumber producers or importers of 15 million board feet or more during 2015, who paid assessments during that time period, will be invited to vote on the continuation of the Order.
